Tric a Chlic - Darllen Cymraeg (Welsh Reading Programme)

At St. David's Catholic Primary School we use the Tric a Chlic proramme to develop pupils' Welsh reading skills. Pupils from Y1 to Y6 have regular Tric a Chlic lessons. There are 3 stages in Tric a Chlic; Cam 1 (Step 1), Cam 2 (Step 2) and Cam 3 (Step 3) which gradually introduce all Welsh letters, sounds (phonemes), vocabulary and important sentence patterns.

What is Tric a Chlic?

Tric a Chlic is a synthetic phonics programme in Welsh for children aged 3-7. The programme is built from three elements namely,

  • hear and recognise the sounds,
  • combine (build) sounds to read
  • segment (cut) sounds to spell.
